The Olympic Flame sparked contactless payments in Lillehammer

By Jens Nes, Country Manager Norway • Visa Europe

April 20, 2016

Until recently, despite being among the keenest card users in the world, with nearly 2 million contactless Visa cards present in the market, Norwegians had been slow to adopt the new technology.

However during the Lillehammer 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games, February 12-21, Visa saw an incredible upswing in usage of contactless across the Olympic venues and in the Lillehammer regions.

With over 50,000 visitors in the activation area, Visa’s contactless showcase and promotions resulted in a major increase in contactless payments during the course of the Youth Olympics. The contactless transaction share at POS was almost 20% during the games period, compared to an average contactless share of less than 1% at POS in Norway.

It seems like Norwegians just needed a spark from the Olympic torch (and some clever Visa communications) for their use of contactless to take off – and Visa Nordics will be sure contactless growth continues to gather momentum.

As the Olympic flame continues to Rio, the 2016 Eurovision Song contest is paying us a visit in May. For the first time, thanks to Visa Nordics and our partners Swedes will be able to pay contactless at the Eurovision Village in Stockholm Kungsträdgården, as well as at the Globe Arena and Tele 2 Arena.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Nordics.
